The Sovereign Mandate: Understanding God’s Transformation Agenda
The Spiritual Blueprint for National Reform
Njideka Anyadike
In Nigeria, bloody ethnic clashes, terrorism, kidnapping, and militancy are but a few of the social issues we are confronted with—all of which are clear indicators that “summer is nigh, it is near, even at the doors” (Matthew 24:32). Despite this air of urgency, the Body of Christ, unfortunately, seems to be largely ignorant of the demands of this season, preferring to stay preoccupied with activities instead of following God’s agenda.
Our commission as Christians is to disciple nations (Matthew 28:19–20) and to occupy the earth effectively (Luke 19:13). This must be accomplished before the end comes (Matthew 24:14; Acts 3:21). As we enter this final stretch leading to the Second Coming of Christ, the Owner of the whole Earth is recovering all that is His. He expects us to “occupy until He comes.”
To truly occupy a territory, one needs spiritual, economic, and political power. Of these three, political power proves to be the most potent weapon of occupation. It enables dominion over all other spheres of influence, including the spiritual. Hitherto, the Body of Christ had not paid much attention to the political sector, preferring to leave it to the “people of the world.” Fortunately, there has been a great awakening regarding the Church's role in nation-building, but the journey remains long.
Reclaiming the Mountain of Government
The Mountain of Government stands as the apex of the seven mountains of influence. It is the seat of authority for our countries, states, cities, families, and churches. Because this mountain has dominion over all other spheres, it is often where the battle for a nation's soul is most fierce.
Hitherto, the Body of Christ has not paid sufficient attention to the political sector, often preferring to leave it to the “people of the world.” Fortunately, we are witnessing a great awakening in the Church’s understanding of its role in nation-building, though the journey ahead is still significant. We must reject the erroneous belief that the governance of this world is only for the ungodly. God established the mountain of government to bring a godly order to society—an order rooted in equitable justice and righteousness.
When we align our governance with the divine order, we fulfill the prayer: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In this spirit, we must examine the stewardship of nations through a biblical lens, recognizing that there is a sovereign and divine purpose for every nation under God.

The Seven Mountains of Influence
National transformation succeeds through a vision that identifies key stakeholders across the seven mountains of cultural influence:
Religion
Family
Education
Government
Media
Arts & Entertainment
Business (Economy)
The Church must go beyond the focus on the salvation of souls alone and advance into intensive discipleship, deploying effective "light" to salt the earth.
